Description:

This course covers the six additional minor ailments that pharmacists can prescribe for in Ontario as of October 1, 2023. Created in partnership with The University of Waterloo (UW), this course expands on the content of the original authorization and equips pharmacists with the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently prescribe and assess for six additional minor ailments. Using a similar methodology as the first course, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of the six minor ailments, processes for assessing patients and the structure pharmacists should implement when providing minor ailment services. 

The six minor ailments include:  

  • Acne (mild) 
  • Aphthous Ulcers (canker sores) 
  • Diaper dermatitis 
  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) 
  • Pinworms and threadworms 
  • Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy 

 

Learning Objectives:

For each minor ailment condition, participants should be able to*: 

  • Describe the pathophysiology 
  • Identify possible causes and risk factors 
  • Apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) necessary for a patient consultation

  • Diaper Dermatitis (Author: Kristi Van Gaalen) - 0.75 hours
  • Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (Author: Nardine Nakhla) - 0.75 hours
  • Pinworms and Threadworms (Author: Sherilyn Houle) - 0.75 hours
  • Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (Author: Kenny Chong) - 0.75 hours
  • Optional: Introduction to Minor Ailment Assessment and Prescribing (Author: Nardine Nakhla) - 1 hour

Throughout the course, you may encounter various interactive learning activities. These are part of the learning experience and are not saved or graded. At the end of each module, you are asked to complete a final exam.

Who Should Take This Course:

This course is intended for pharmacists prescribing for minor ailments. This course is also open to healthcare providers who are interested in and would benefit from the content of this program.  

This course does not focus on the legal requirements for pharmacists prescribing for minor ailments in each jurisdiction. Please refer to the regulatory authority in your jurisdiction for more information.
