Description:
Delivering a Comprehensive Pharmacy-Based Vaccines Program was developed to provide pharmacists with the knowledge to become a primary source for information about the vaccines that pharmacists are permitted to administer in Ontario. This program dedicates approximately 10 to 20 minutes per vaccine, as well as individual modules on how to implement a pharmacy-based vaccine service, how to handle adverse events post- immunization and additional helpful resources.
This course will prepare you for travel-specific vaccines as well as refresh your knowledge of the day-to-day vaccinations that are becoming increasingly prevalent in pharmacy practices today.
This program is funded through the Independent Medical Education Grant by GSK Canada.
Please note: Completion of this course does not grant authority to administer injections. Such authority is granted by legislation through each healthcare professional’s own regulatory college. Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
Implementing a Pharmacy-Based Vaccine Service module:
- Discuss the scope of practice of pharmacy team members related to vaccination services
- Discuss the actions that need to be taken by both pharmacists and other pharmacy staff to successfully integrate vaccination services into community practice
- Suggest marketing or promotional strategies that can increase the uptake of vaccination services in community pharmacy
- Identify reimbursement and compensation opportunities for community pharmacies wishing to implement vaccination services
Adverse Effects to Vaccination module:
- Recognize signs and symptoms of adverse reactions and select appropriate treatment (bruising, fainting, urticaria)
- Describe signs and symptoms and risk factors of anaphylaxis and appropriate management
- Describe procedures for adverse reaction reporting
Vaccine-specific modules:
- Identify patients who are at risk for Bacille Calmette Guérin, COVID-19, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis A & B, Herpes Zoster, Human Papillomavirus, Influenza, Japanese Encephalitis, Meningococcal, Pneumococcal, Rabies, Typhoid, Varicella, and Yellow Fever
- Counsel patients on prevention strategies, complications, vaccine types, dosing schedules, routes of administration, contraindications, and management of common side effects
- Prepare for the administration of vaccines with special storage and handling guidelines
