Advocacy Accomplishments (2021)
- Expansion of scope for pharmacy professionals to administer COVID-19 vaccine by injection
- Pharmacy professionals included in primary priority group of healthcare workers to receive COVID-19 vaccine
- Successful negotiation for funding for administration of COVID-19 vaccines through pharmacies
- Successful rollout and continued evolution of COVID-19 vaccines in Ontario pharmacies
- Regulatory amendments to enable registered pharmacy students, pharmacy interns and pharmacy technicians to conduct point-of-care antigen testing for COVID-19
- Publicly funded PCR and Antigen Screening program launched in pharmacies to support the provincial testing strategy
- Rapid antigen test kit distribution to SMEs through pharmacies
- Successful negotiation for increase in funding for influenza vaccinations through pharmacies
- Successful advocacy to carry forward changes made in the 2021/20 UIIP season forward to the 2021/22 season
- Commitment to continue engagement on additional recommendations (administrative burden, scope for pharmacy technicians)
- Pause on the planned reduction of the current capitation model threshold to maintain funding at $1,500 per bed
- Expansion of support for the profession through extending OPA Professional Practice to any registered pharmacy professional
- Expedited approval of regulatory amendments to enable emergency assignment registration
- Regulations amended to reclassify the OSCE to operate under the same regulations as post-secondary institutions to permit the February 2021 OSCEs
Advocacy Future Focus
- Expansion of scope to enable pharmacists to assess and treat patients with minor ailments
- Expansion of scope to enable pharmacy professionals to administer all routine publicly funded vaccines
- Enable pharmacy professionals to work to their full potential across the healthcare system (e.g. enable point of care testing, approval of draft regulations pertaining to injections and inhalations for purposes beyond education and demonstration, dedicated funding to support expanded services through LTC pharmacies, ensure professionals can practice to full scope in all practice settings)
- Ensure economic sustainability through appropriate funding for services like minor ailments and increase to the dispensing and compounding fees
- Well-being of pharmacy professionals with special focus on mental and physical health challenges caused by the pandemic
- Establish a formal Pharmacy Table between OPA and government
