This module focuses on evaluating stroke and major bleeding risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. Participants will learn how to select the appropriate pharmacotherapy for reducing stroke risk. Additionally, learn how to complete a risk assessment to determine the appropriate drug and duration for the induction, treatment, and extended treatment of venous thromboembolism. The module also covers the importance of considering renal function when adjusting doses of anticoagulant drugs, as well as an overview of recent developments in anticoagulant usage.
This module is extracted from the Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) Preparation Course. The content in this module provides current treatment guidelines for all populations and are not necessarily specific to geriatric care.

- Determine stroke and major bleeding risk for patients with atrial fibrillation
- Select appropriate pharmacotherapy for stroke risk reduction in atrial fibrillation
- Complete a risk assessment to determine appropriate pharmacotherapy, both drug and duration, for the induction, treatment, and extended treatment of venous thromboembolism
- Determine whether dose adjustments for renal function are required for anticoagulant drugs
