The provincial government’s recent announcement enables registered pharmacy technicians to administer COVID-19 vaccines. OPA’s program designed to help you master core immunization practices and learn how to adequately administer vaccines by injection.

This program is tailored for pharmacy technicians and is recognized by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) for registered pharmacy technician injection training. The program also addresses the 7 competencies approved and required by The Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP).

In-person live session:

February 27, 2021 at the OPA office* (155 University Ave #600, Toronto, ON)

There will be more sessions coming soon, in Toronto and other locations including Kingston, Ottawa, Hamilton and Niagara among others.

The in-person live session at the OPA offices is for the Practical Exam portion of the course. This is a mandatory component.

During the session, each participant will attend the practical exam as supervised by a Registered Nurse or Pharmacist. You will be partnered with another participant for this session. The instructor will observe you demonstrating both intramuscular and subcutaneous injections on your partner and your partner will, in turn, demonstrate on your arm. Please be prepared by wearing appropriate attire to receive these injections in the upper portion of your arm.

  • Online learning modules (4 hours):
    Online learning modules. Multiple-choice exam. Reflective exercise
  • In-Person Live Session:
    Practicing techniques. Practical exam (demonstration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injections on a partner)

  • Completion requirement: Complete the program’s online component. Attend the live one-day program and successfully demonstrate the skills required to administer subcutaneous and intramuscular injections. Achieve 70% or more on the post-program online examination (maximum two attempts) and complete the reflective exercise and evaluations before course expiry date.

Who should take this course:

All pharmacy technicians registered with OCP who are taking part in COVID-19 vaccination camapign.
