The ability to critically appraise research papers so that information can be relayed to patients or other healthcare providers is an essential skill for pharmacists. With science changing at a rapid pace and papers frequently being published on different aspects of healthcare, today’s pharmacists are expected to keep up with and discern evidence-based biomedical research.

This course outlines a robust process for assessing the credibility of research papers and consideration techniques for making clinical decisions. In addition, the course will provide you with the knowledge to develop and implement practice-based research on interventions to improve patient outcomes, especially with older adults.

Learning objectives:

  • Assess biomedical information considering study design and methodology. 
  • Discuss statistical analysis, and significance of reported data and conclusions. 
  • Analyze the relevance and limitations of biomedical information for the care of older adults. 
  • Apply the findings and outcomes of research to the care of older adults. 
  • Evaluate the relevancy of clinical practice guidelines and standards of care for older adults. 
  • Collect and interpret data to investigate medication use. 
  • Disseminate results of research to target audience.
