June 3, 2019 (KINGSTON) – Pharmacist Manager, Cory Sydorenko, was selected for the Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA)’s 2019 Outstanding New Practitioner of the Year Award. The award will be presented at Pharmacy Experience Pharmacie (PxP) 2019 – a joint conference hosted by OPA and the Canadian Pharmacists Association in Toronto from June 3-5, 2019.

Sydorenko has been with Lovell Drugs at the Frontenac Medical Pharmacy in Kingston, Ont. for the past three years. Here he serves a diverse range of patients with varying demographics and multiple comorbidities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Sydorenko has distinguished himself as a leader in the profession by innovating new practices. He has been instrumental in developing a company-wide medicinal cannabis program and has undertaken several continuing education programs to be able to provide expert advice to patients. He has also independently developed a long-acting antipsychotic depot program at the pharmacy that provides injection services to underserviced mental health patients in the region. His injection clinic has been prominently recognized by mental health professionals in Kingston and continues to offer services to patients in a safe and comfortable environment.

“The Outstanding New Practitioner of the Year award recognizes a new-to-the-field pharmacist who has demonstrated commitment to patient care and innovative practice, and whose contributions have resulted in measurable and significant improvement to their practice,” said Bill Wilson, Interim CEO of OPA. “Cory is a deserving recipient of this award as he has successfully implemented programming that serves his community and the region in meaningful ways.”

When asked what his advice for new professionals entering the industry is, Sydorenko said not to be afraid of treading outside comfort zones and addressing the needs of patients.

“Now, more than ever, the public is turning to pharmacies as overall wellness destinations, not just for prescriptions but for advice and value-added services,” said Sydorenko. “Be one to champion these services, assess needs in the community and come up with solutions to solve them.”

Prior to entering the field, Sydorenko graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2016 as a Doctor of Pharmacy and holds an Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Sciences from the University of Western Ontario with specializations in Microbiology and Immunology.

OPA’s Annual Awards Ceremony recognizes and acknowledges the significant contributions that are being made by individuals in the pharmacy profession throughout Ontario.
