June 3, 2019 (TORONTO) – John Papastergiou has been named the recipient of the Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA)’s Excellence in Research Award. Papastergiou will be presented with the award at Pharmacy Experience Pharmacie (PxP) 2019 – a joint conference hosted by OPA and the Canadian Pharmacists Association in Toronto from June 3-5, 2019.
“This award is about recognizing a pharmacist who has shown an exemplary commitment to advancing the profession through academic research or expanding their practice through continuing education,” said Bill Wilson, Interim CEO of OPA. “John goes above and beyond meeting these criteria with his continued passion and dedication to improving the field through research. His work sets the stage for the pharmacy industry to become stronger and increasingly effective, particularly within Ontario.”
Papastergiou has a unique background in clinical research and is actively involved in various initiatives that investigate an expanded role for community pharmacists. In 2014, he was appointed to the Ontario Pharmacist Research Collaboration (OPEN) and his primary goal is to employ quantitative methods to validate the effectiveness of various innovative clinical programs and, ultimately, use his work as a template for future clinics in community pharmacies across the country.
Papastergiou currently owns and operates three Shoppers Drug Mart locations in downtown Toronto and was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Pharmacy with the University of Waterloo in 2014, followed by a cross appointment at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto in 2016.
In response to learning that he won this award, Papastergiou said it is “particularly special because it represents a unique achievement of being able to conduct practice research in a community setting. I hope that I have had at least some impact on the practice change that has occurred over the last few years. The opportunity to collaborate with other professionals in the field has been a highlight of my career.”
Papastergiou has received multiple awards including being named the Shoppers Drug Mart Associate of the Year, the CPhA Canadian Pharmacist of the Year, and received the OPA Mentorship Award. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OPA Voice of the Profession Award and also received the Pharmacy Practice Commitment to Care Award for Overall Patient Care.
OPA’s Annual Awards Ceremony recognizes and acknowledges the significant contributions that are being made by individuals in the pharmaceutical industry throughout Ontario.
