This live, in-person session at the OPA Office offers a unique opportunity to explore the integration of Traditional Indigenous Healing within pharmacy practice. Guided by Elder Laureen ‘Blu’ Waters and Dr. Cassandra McLelland, participants will delve into the critical role pharmacists play in supporting patients through a culturally respectful collaboration between Western medicine and Indigenous healing practices. 

Throughout the session, attendees will learn practical methods for engaging with Indigenous patients and ensuring that their care is safe and respectful. The session will include a background and framework on Indigenous healing practices and medicines, connecting the role of pharmacy practice in supporting Indigenous patients to safely coordinate Western and Indigenous health practices. The presentation will familiarize attendees with the context and use of Traditional practices, the ownership and control of Indigenous healing, and offer monitoring and mitigation strategies when navigating potential interactions. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a ‘tour’ of traditional medicines, followed by a Q&A with the speakers, providing valuable resources and insights for pharmacy professionals committed to enhancing Indigenous health through collaborative practices.

Elder Laureen ‘Blu’ Waters (they/them)

Elder Laureen ‘Blu’ Waters (they/them)

Elder Laureen ‘Blu’ Waters (they/them) is a Traditional healer, educator, and Two-Spirit Elder. Their spirit name is Istchii Nikamoon, meaning Earth Song, and their ancestry is Cree and Métis Micmac, a member of the Wolf Clan and the Métis Nation of Ontario. Raised by their grandmother, Blu learned traditional medicines and healing practices deeply rooted in the teachings of their ancestors. They serve as an Elder on campus at Seneca College, offering traditional teachings and one-to-one counselling. Blu contributed to the National Inquiry for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and is involved with several organizations supporting Indigenous and Two-Spirit communities. Learn More.

Dr. Cassandra McLelland ​(she/her)

Dr. Cassandra McLelland ​(she/her)

Dr. Cassandra McLelland (she/her)is an Anishinaabe kwe (woman) with mixed French Canadian and Scottish ancestry. Her family hails from M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island and belongs to the makwa (bear) clan. Dr. McLelland graduated from the University of Waterloo’s Schoolof Pharmacy in 2018 and completed a pharmacy residency at the University Health Network in Toronto. Dr. McLelland is the Vice-Chair of the board of directors for the Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada. She currently practices as a clinical pharmacist in the Centre for Complex Diabetes Care at William Osler Health System. Learn More.
