This course is designed to provide pharmacy professionals with an overview of Parkinson’s disease (PD), its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and pharmacologic management. Participants will learn about common signs and symptoms, non-motor symptoms, and motor fluctuations associated with PD. The course will also cover the management of PD-related outcomes, drug-related problems, and interventions that pharmacists can make in the care of elderly patients with PD. By the end of this course, participants will have a thorough understanding of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of PD, and will be able to apply this knowledge to provide effective care for elderly patients with PD.
This module is extracted from the Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) Preparation Course. The content in this module provides current treatment guidelines for all populations and are not necessarily specific to geriatric care.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Discuss the common signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD)
- Review the pathophysiology, diagnosis and epidemiology of PD
- Describe the pharmacologic management of PD in the older patient, including specific therapies and how they are used
- Review monitoring of PD-related outcomes
- Outline the non-motor symptoms associated with PD and how they are managed
- Discuss motor fluctuations and how medication therapy can be adjusted to manage them
- Review the most common drug-related problems encountered in this population and describe interventions that pharmacists can make in the care of the elderly patient with PD
