In response to the recent introduction of 15-valent and 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in Canada, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) published a statement on their recommended use within public health programs. Following a review of pneumococcal disease and the available vaccine options, this program will use an interactive case-based approach to prepare pharmacists to identify patients eligible for vaccination and recommend the most appropriate vaccine for protection against pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:  

  • Differentiate available pneumococcal vaccine products based on preparation (conjugate or polysaccharide), serotype coverage, and indications 
  • Identify everyday opportunities in community practice to screen for patients eligible for pneumococcal vaccination 
  • Apply NACI recommendations to patient cases that may be encountered in practice
