Did you know that the highest percentage of break-ins happen during the summer?
Â
Windows and doors left open, or homeowners away on vacation, can provide opportunities for intruders to gain entry.
Â
A security system can be an effective deterrent, but there are also other simple ways to keep your home safe and secure.
Â
Here are some practical things you can do to help prevent a break-in:
- Don’t announce your vacation or trips on social media.
- Lock windows and doors, even if you leave briefly, are outside on your property, or inside your home.
- Keep valuables in a safe or lockbox when you’re away.
- Install motion sensors and secondary locks.
- Trim shrubs and bushes to eliminate hiding spots.
- Don’t hide extra keys outside.
- Change the locks when you move into a new home.
- Ask a neighbour or family member to collect mail or newspapers while you’re away.
- Use timers on your lights.
- Keep your windows covered to conceal valuables.Â
If you come home and notice a break-in, don’t enter. Call 911 immediately.
Â
Keep an updated inventory of your belongings. This will make it easier for police to identify items if they’re recovered.
