Did you know that the highest percentage of break-ins happen during the summer?

Windows and doors left open, or homeowners away on vacation, can provide opportunities for intruders to gain entry.

A security system can be an effective deterrent, but there are also other simple ways to keep your home safe and secure.

Here are some practical things you can do to help prevent a break-in:

  1. Don’t announce your vacation or trips on social media.
  2. Lock windows and doors, even if you leave briefly, are outside on your property, or inside your home.
  3. Keep valuables in a safe or lockbox when you’re away.
  4. Install motion sensors and secondary locks.
  5. Trim shrubs and bushes to eliminate hiding spots.
  6. Don’t hide extra keys outside.
  7. Change the locks when you move into a new home.
  8. Ask a neighbour or family member to collect mail or newspapers while you’re away.
  9. Use timers on your lights.
  10. Keep your windows covered to conceal valuables.

If you come home and notice a break-in, don’t enter. Call 911 immediately.

Keep an updated inventory of your belongings. This will make it easier for police to identify items if they’re recovered.
